Newborn Session Preparation

Newborn sessions take some time as baby needs to be fully relaxed which may mean settling by a parent, giving them a feed or just lying them down and waiting for them to drift off. You are welcome to bring drinks and snacks with you and I am happy to make you a nice hot cup of tea or coffee so you can fully relax however these cannot be taken into the studio for safety reasons.

Family or sibling photos
If you have chosen the Eucalypt package, I take family photos at the start of the session and advise you to bring someone with you or two cars so other children can leave or go and play as they will get bored and restless sitting around for the rest of the session waiting for us to finish and may disturb the baby. There is a playground just a short walk from my studio.

What to do with baby before the session;
Keep baby awake and interact with them prior to the session so they are tired when you arrive but don’t stretch them out too long or they will be overtired. Many people think it's a good idea to give baby a sleep first so they're not cranky but this can lead to them being wide awake for the session and not wanting to curl up and go to sleep and you won't get those dreamy images you want and may leave the session frustrated.

Please ensure baby has a full tummy for the session so they're not hungry and bring bottles or be prepared to breastfeed if baby becomes unsettled. Also bring plenty of nappies, wipes and some cream or baby oil to moisturise any dry skin and a dummy to settle them into poses, even if they don't normally take one.

Do I need to bring anything?
I have a range of blankets, wraps and props to use however please bring along any special outfits, blankets or comforters that you wish to have your baby photographed with. Avoid clothing with characters or slogans as they date quickly. Knitted outfits and beanies photograph really well and are timeless.

What to wear;
· Baby - dress them in an outfit you would like to include in some photos so if they're asleep on arrival we don't have to wake or undress them. No singlets underneath and avoid clothing that needs to be pulled off over their head as this will wake them.
· Dads - jeans and a plain black, grey or white top
· Mums - long dresses or jeans and a white/cream, grey or black top
· Siblings - Jeans, pants, dresses or leggings or plain neutral colours and a shirt or top.

If you would like to wear a bit of colour, please all dress in similar colours. If there are too many different colours, it will distract the eye from the focus of the images - your faces. For example; all wearing jeans and different shades of one colour for tops. See my gallery for some ideas.
